Gretchen Nelson Scott Fine Arts Center

The Gretchen Nelson Scott Fine Arts Center was opened on November 2017.  The Marion G. and Barbara W. Nelson Foundation generously donated millions of dollars for the Center to be built. Students now have a wonderful facility to showcase their talents of music, art, and theatre. If you would like to donate please see click this link:

Information on the Name

Gretchen Nelson Scott

December 21, 1935 – June 2, 2014 
Gretchen was born in Marianna, Florida on December 21, 1935 to the late Marion G. and Barbara W. Nelson. Past infancy, Gretchen was a lifelong resident of Panama City.

Gretchen attended and graduated from Panama Grammar School and was a 1953 graduate of Bay High School. Following high schools she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Wesleyan College. Gretchen had a great love for family, friends, faith and music. Many of her friends and family will recall receiving needlepoint, knitted and cross-stitched gifts, which she enjoyed making greatly. Many in the community will also remember her gift of singing, which she shared freely, gracing many weddings and other social occasions. She also enjoyed social activities belonging to groups like the Daughters of the American Revolution, As You Like It, Paper Dolls and the Panama City Women’s Club. She taught second grade at Cove Elementary School, tutored students in her home and also worked at Nelson Buick Company. She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church.
